Mission Kitchen
Project by: Charlie Gent, Paul Smyth, and Chris Lumsden
Designed by: 00 Architecture Challenge: How can we help food start-ups to start up? Project description: With a recent surge in interest in food issues, London is seeing a boom in entrepreneurial food culture. More food businesses now apply for start-up loans than any other sector, with over 15,000 emerging into the UK market each year. Mission Kitchen was set up in 2016, to overcome some of the difficulties early stage food businesses face in getting their hands-on kitchen space, equipment, certifications and the support they need. The new Mission Kitchen flagship site, to be completed in 2019, will be located in the historic redevelopment of London's New Covent Garden Market and will be a central feature of its transformation. Mission Kitchen will dedicate more than 1672 m2 of floor space to the support of new start-up food businesses, comprising top-of-the- range commercial shared kitchens, studio spaces and a sustainable food incubator. It will become a cooking community, where members can cook together, work together, eat together and learn from one another, and will include an events programme with exhibitions, training classes, talks and tastings, that celebrate food culture and teach new skills. |
