Chicken Run (still in development) was an innovation project for M&S, McDonald’s UK and leading UK agricultural consultancy FAI Farms, exploring ideas for improving the lives of farmed poultry. Chicken Run focused on enrichment and environment seeking to make significant positive impact on animal welfare, contribute to better business operations, and ultimately, help develop a more sustainable farming practice.
An initial one-week workshop, run by the Department 22 team in October 2013, included site visits and access to expert advisors. Participants uncovered insights, identified challenges and generated ideas about a variety of issues incuding feed, barn design, perching, and a disconnect between consumers and farmers. During a six-month development phase prototypes of the most viable ideas were built and tested.
